Commodore’s Message – April 2010

The Cougar Yacht Club is a great big group of alumni, family and friends who really enjoy boating in the Northwest and around the world! I know we’re all thinking about getting back out on the water in 2010!  Here are some upcoming Cougar Yacht Club activities and events you should plan to attend:

May 1, 2010, 10:00a.m. – 5:00 p.m.:
2009 Opening Day of Yachting Season                        Location:  Seattle Yacht Club
Chairs: Commodore Kate Kruller & Past Commodore Paul Sunich

Plan to ride along on one of the Cougar Yacht Club boats in the Opening Day parade through the Montlake Cut, past the log boom, and on to the Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club in Bellevue for a rally and hamburger feed.  This year's Opening Day theme is “Out of This World” and our own Past Commodore, John Brenneis, is the Admiral of the Day!  Contact Kate Kruller at cougaryc@gmail.com   or call (206)853-9330 before April 18 to sign up.  Then you can meet us on the Seattle Yacht Club dock at 10:00am Saturday morning, board your vessel, and cheer on the Cougars with the WSU Alumni Band and Butch.  The required uniform is the official Opening Day WSU sweatshirt (contact us to get yours), bring your own cowboy hat (we’ve got some spares if you need one), white pants or shorts, white belt, and white shoes and socks.  Look sharp in the shadow of Husky Stadium!

IF YOU'D LIKE TO BRING YOUR BOAT TO PORTAGE BAY THAT WEEK AND JOIN THE PARADE FLOTILLA…
Contact Kate Kruller at cougaryc@gmail.com   or call (206)853-9330 before April 16.

July 16-18, 2010
2009 Port Ludlow Golf Cruise                        Location:  Port Ludlow Marina
Chairs: Karll and Barbara Rusch
We have a great cruise and golf event to Port Ludlow in July!  Friday night we signed up to use the Fire Pit.  We reserve tee times for golf on Saturday.   We have an indoor space for our gathering/meal Saturday night.  If there’s enough interest, we can plan a boat tour at the wooden boat school in the area for some of those that are not golfing!

Other events coming up that Cougar Yacht Club members may attend include:

Cougar Yacht Club involvement in the Northwest Boating Council (this is a group of many yacht clubs collaborating on events together).  Key events you may want to join in on include:

* On April 3, there is a unique way to “give back” to the community through a NW Boating Council Blake Island Work Party – where we join an effort to clean up the island a bit and prepare for boating season.  Please feel free to contact me for more information about this.  It’s a lot of fun and a worthy boating community activity.
* The NW Boating Council Picnic in Brownsville is also not to be missed in June 4 –6.  Our members have really enjoyed cruising there and joining in all the fun!

Our annual Fall Football Cruise to Bell Harbor in September 11-12 is when we take over the Seattle waterfront and paint the town Crimson and Gray in support of our team! The game isn’t in Seattle this year, but the Cougar Spirit is alive and well! Our Friday dinner and raffle on the dock are not to be missed – did I mention dancing into the night with live band music?  This is also a great opportunity to pick up Cougar Yacht Club gear to show school spirit in a yacht club style. Saturday everyone gets ready to watch the game and cheer for the Cougars! It’s the best thing in the world to know you’re in an all-Cougar fleet of friends to enjoy the great game!

Don’t forget our Annual Holiday Party in December again.  Kayla Schober and Sam Kanner are once again up for co-chairing that event!  This is always a nice gathering of Cougar friends to finish out the year in the holiday spirit.  We install the officers for next year, participate in a silent auction, enjoy a fabulous dinner, pick up Cougar Yacht Club gear because they make such good Christmas presents.

Keep watching this website as more details on these activities develop!

We want this year to give our members all the fun they can sign up for and keep them coming back for more!   Feel free to contact me or anyone of the officers with your ideas and offers to volunteer.  We’ll make it worth your while!  See you out on the water.

GO COUGARS!
